Collection or Contortion: The Anatomy and Biomechanics of Positioning and Bending
by Gerd Heuschman DVM
I came across this book through an equestrian book club called Books and Bourbon. As a student of classical riding, I have been fascinated by the importance of understanding biomechanics in the horse to develop not just their physical structure but also ensure their emotional and mental wellbeing.
The author takes a closer look at how correct positioning of the horse’s body can lead to a willing partner and high performance. I was particularly intrigued by the fact that the old teachings understood things at an incredible depth without the benefit of having access to the anatomical knowledge we now have.
The physical wellbeing cannot be separated from emotional and mental health. Vitality must encompass all aspects of an individual. By understanding the physical needs of the horse, we can work towards being the best steward and guardian for these amazing individuals who share their lives with us.

I took away so many “aha” moments in regards to the proper biomechanics of the horse under saddle and how correct training can add to the longevity and vitality of your equine partner. It is amazing to me that these old masters had such insight into the anatomy of the horse. I highly recommend delving into this book for any rider, trainer, and bodyworker.

Essential Oils for Animals
by Nayana Morag
I met the author when I attended a workshop on how to use essential oils with horses. Little did I know it would start me on a long journey into the Five Elements of TCM. This book, as you can see, is well loved and used frequently. It is a comprehensive guide on how to best choose and use essential oils in a safe and effective manner. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Nayana truly is an expert and her teachings are incredibly profound.

Although I have not read this book cover to cover yet, I am viewing it more as reference material and guide for when it is needed. The section on the Five Elements of TCM was also my entry point into this topic, and I appreciated the simplicity and yet profound impact of understanding the concept. I have noticed that even my cat is self-selecting essential oils that she deems helpful to her constitution. Nayana did an incredible job of keeping the information simple yet detailed enough to make it easily digestible and useable.

Healing Ancient Wounds: The Renegade’s Wisdom
by John F. Barnes, PT
Daniela gifted me this book when I completed my first in-depth bodywork certification program for horses. The material was so profound and taught me to listen to my intuition and feel with my hands, no matter how out of this world it might seem. John has a wonderful way of connecting with the reader and connecting you to the divine world of fascia in all its brilliance.

I acquired this book when I first started learning about the wonderful world of myofascial work. I had no idea what a deep dive into the energetics of trauma and distortion it would send me on. John has a beautiful way of bringing the sacred into our work, of finding the magic within not just the physical structure but the entire individual. This book has many notes and bookmarks, and I feel drawn to refer to it time and time again. John truly invites us to step outside conventional wisdom and discover the renegade within ourselves. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone willing to step outside the box and truly commit to a healing journey.
